Acquiring Riot Games, creator of League of Legends is among the most successful deals of Tencent.
The famous MOBA game was released by Riot Games in 2009. In fact, the American-based game publisher had developed League of Legends since 2006. In the game, there are 10 players in 2 teams competing in player vs player combat. Their goal is to occupy and defend their half of the game map.
In 2011, Riot Games officially became a subsidiary of the conglomerate Tencent, adding League of Legends to the available Tencent games list. 2 — PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and its mobile version brought billions to Tencent’s net worth.
Another online multiplayer game that brings enormous profit to Tencent is PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG. Inspired by the Japanese movie Battle Royale, the South Korean company Bluehole developed PUBG and published its beta program in March, 2017.
In August, Tencent announced it had invested an amount of money into Bluehole. At the end of the year when PUBG was fully published, the Chinese giant successfully gained 11.5% of the South Korean company, becoming a co-owner of the classic title.
3 — PUBG Mobile
The year 2020 witnessed a boom in PUBG Mobile users.
One year after the full release of PUBG, Tencent Games and PUBG Corporation announced two versions of PUBG Mobile: Exhilarating Battlefield and Army Attack. The former then became the worldwide English version as we know today.
Last year, when the world faced a massive lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, PUBG Mobile rose to the top of Tencent games list and became the highest-grossing game of 2020 with around $2.6 billion in revenue. Over 50% of the money came from its Chinese version Game for Peace. However, PUBG Mobile suffered a considerable loss after facing a ban in India where half of its players were living.

Ubisoft — 5 percent
Tencent was one of several investors that helped Ubisoft survive a hostile takeover last year from Vivendi, who at the time was Ubisoft’s largest stakeholder. For years, Vivendi had been steadily acquiring more stake in Ubisoft in hopes of ousting founder Yves Guillemot and seizing control for itself—putting thousands of jobs in jeopardy in the process. The situation looked grim until Ubisoft struck a deal with Vivendi that saw the French conglomerate divest its stake to a variety of investors that included Tencent.
As part of the agreement, though, Tencent is just a silent partner who cannot increase voting rights or ownership stake in Ubisoft—making a hostile takeover by Tencent impossible. The acquisition of Ubisoft shares also heralded in a strategic partnership where Tencent would publish Ubisoft games in China, which caused its own flurry of backlash over censorship.

Мы играем в игры и смотрим фильмы, на которые студии тратят миллионы долларов, и каждый цент в эту копилку положили люди из разных точек мира. Согласно отчетам Bloomberg, компания Tencent стоит около 69 миллиардов долларов, что делает ее восьмым крупным бизнесом по общей рыночной стоимости.

Негатив идет не только от западной аудитории, но и со стороны китайцев. Одна из популярных претензий — аддиктивность продуктов, издаваемых Tencent. На форуме Quora есть потрясающий поинт о том, как китайские родители недовольны этим: дети вместо учебы и прогулок все свободное время тратят на мобильные игры медиа гиганта, да еще и пользуются микротранзакциями за родительский счет.
В первом случае обвинения в жадности часто идут от непонимания построения специфики бизнеса. Во втором — скорее от нежелания брать ответственность за собственных детей. Исторический контекст и вечное противостояние Запада и Востока создали атмосферу неприятия и скептического отношения к инвесторам из Китая
Важно понимать, что смешивание капитала это благо для бизнеса. Благодаря глобализации людям стало гораздо легче привлечь финансовый ресурс и найти средства на свои проекты
В таком ключе Tencent вовсе не антагонист — союзник — партнер с Востока, который поможет превратить хорошую идею в жизнь.
